The port of Souda is one of the most important natural harbors of the Mediterranean. Today one can visit the still existing Turkish settles, the fish harbor but most of all you can visit the Aliens Cemetery of Vlites Souda. 7 klms east of Souda you can reach kalami, a small village with a few traditional houses and panoramic view on the bay.
In the area of "Vlites", west from the gulf of Souda, surrounded by a beautiful natural environment, lie the graves of the ally soldiers who fell in the battle for freedom during WW2. The cemetery was build and is preserved by the Common State Commission of Military Graves, and was constructed after the war to contain the remains of all the Common State soldiers that fell in the Cretan battlefields. The architect of the cemetery was Louis De Soissons. In the war memorial site of Faliro are honored those whose graves are anonymous. As stated on the inscription, the site was built to express the gratitude of the Greek people and to honor the memory of those who fell in the name of freedom. The cemetery contains the remains of: 862 persons from the United Kingdom, 5 persons from Canada,197 persons from Australia, 446 persons from New Zealand, 9 persons from South Africa, 1 person from India, 7 persons from other ethnicities; a total of 1527 persons.The entire land is divided into plots of 4.000m until 17.000m, whereof every one is facing a road at least 25m. Every 4.000m a private residence of up to 200m can be constructed. The land is at the very first stadium of (Urban construction) and the completion will take approx. two more years. After the approval is completed, on every 1.000m2 a private residence of up to 400m can be built.
