The appearance of Santorini as you will see it today is due to the devastating volcanic eruption that took place thousands of years ago. The huge eruption caused a large part of the island to
sink, and the aftershocks and subsequent tsunami is said to have wiped out the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete.
The submerged volcano and a caldera are the remaining of the eruption. Santorini is also considered by many to actually be the "missing city of Atlantis".
There are some excellent beaches around the island, including the famous black sandy beach of Kamari. On the various beaches around Santorini you can enjoy swimming and relaxation, as well as a variety of water sports and activities including scuba diving.

How to reach the Island

Another way to reach the island is by a regular ferry boat service from the port of Piraeus, Thessaloniki or Crete and almost all the Cycladic islands.
