Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece and the capital of Macedonia. With an international airport 17 km east, it is the ideal place to start your vacation in Northern Greece. Although it is a much better option to explore the city center on foot, you will need to rent a car to discover the wider area.
Thessaloniki is a port city built in the Thermaic Gulf, overlooking Mount Olympus. The city center has four main avenues (Nikis, Tsimiski, Egnatia, Agios Dimitrios) along with the busy waterfront where locals meet.
The central squares of Aristotelous and Eleftherias overlook Nikis Avenue, the coastal road of the city that leads to the White Tower of the 15th century.
