The closest sandy beach is a short drive away (9km) in Almyrida, the longest sandy beach in Georgioupolis is just 11km away and for a refreshing swim one can admire the turquoise waters of the bay of Ombrosgialos, just 5km away.

Location

The community of Kefalas is situated approx. 4 km to the east of Vamos. It is a large village built in an outstanding position facing the sea with architecture dominated by the influence of the early and late years of the Turkish occupation. This influence is well preserved despite the existence of other architectural styles. The village is living the whole year around and kafenia, taverns and supermarkets can be found there. A small drive away, one will reach Ombrosgialos, a small nice bay of turquoise water and in the other direction are the long sandy beaches of Georgioupolis.

Almirida (sometimes spelled as Almyrida) is a small village in the Apokoronas province, with 3 shallow beaches (two small ones, one a little bit bigger, but nice, and there are more beaches within walking distance) located in the bay of Souda, about 25km west of Chania. The village looks out over the sea and the Akrotiri peninsula. Its still sort of quiet, with some waterside taverns, a few bars and a couple of hotels. In Almirida you can also find the remains of an early Christian basilica from the 5th century, with mosaics and some fallen down pillars.

Vamos is located away from the hustle of the towns and tourists. It is an unspoilt Cretan village with view of the Lefka Ori (White Mountains), and has maintained its traditional architectural style. One will find some interesting churches, clearly showing the traditional architecture of the buildings in the area. The hospitality and the way of life the Cretan people used to lead before the burst of tourism is captured in these villages as a present way of life. The area is very scenic, having maintained its traditional character, mainly due to the attentive restoration of old buildings.
