The peninsula of Akrotiri rises to the northeast of Chania and acts as a barrier that protects Souda Bay from heavy north winds.

On the north coast, sandy beaches provide excellent swimming, and the northeast has old monasteries to visit.

The airport and military facilities dominate the center and south of the peninsula. Many visitors come to Crete to see its rare wildflowers, and many different kinds may be found from January to April on the Akrotiri.

Stavros is located on the north-west tip of the Akrotiri peninsula and about 14km north of the city of Chania. There are two large beaches at Stavros on either side of a narrow headland and both overlooking expansive and beautiful bays with large rock outcrops behind.

Many of the beach scenes from the hit 1060s movie Zorba the Greek were filmed here and in the local villages.

To the east of Stavros is a small fishing harbour and beach while to the west are the longer stretches of good sand, with rock pools along the shoreline for added interest.

Beaches tend to be very quiet during on weekdays and there is little to disturb the peace but it can get more crowded at weekends as Stavros is a very popular place with the locals. A beach cantina opens in the summer season serving the basics and a good taverna is located on the main road.

Stavros village has restaurants and shops but no nightlife beyond the tavernas and bars. Other beaches are nearby, notably at Kalathias which has windsurfing and scuba diving.

Inland Akrotiri is great for nature lovers with plenty of hiking trails, some old monasteries and several ancient ruins. In contrast to the attractive beach area, the village is rather drab with just scattering of houses alongside holiday apartments and hotels.
