Kolymbari is a holiday resort, a developing area, a hospitable fishermen village about 25 km west of Chania, in the northwest coast of Crete. The Monastery of Gonia is very famous in Crete, visitable and known for the hidden treasures inside, welcoming thousands of people every year for the celebration of Mary Mother of Jesus on the 15th of August which is a national day off for Greeks. That day and one day before is the busiest period for the village. Open markets, festivals and folklore music concerts take place and all the visitors and locals come to light a candle at the church and then have fun at the open party of the new port’s open square, tasting local specialities and drinking good wine!
