Kolymbari, is a small, quiet fishing village at the foot of the Rodopou peninsula on the island of Crete, a great place to get away and relax if youre after for a nice, quiet destination that has been relatively untouched by an overabundance of tourism. The village is about 23 kilometers west of Chania on the way to Kissamos and has frequent bus connections for easy access.

Nestled between majestic green cliffs and the Mediterranean Sea, Kolymbari is also known for its beautiful beach, cozy tavernas and cafés including a seaside stone-built café on the beach, as well as several restaurants and a few shops.

The shops available offer everyday essentials in addition to some souvenirs, but there isnt a huge variety or a selection. The long sandy pebble beach is being improved and artificially enlarged by some fine, powdery, shipped-in sand and is ideal for leisurely swimming.

The famous Greek Orthodox Monastery Gonias is a must-see for visitors of this quaint village, with its rust-colored domes.

The original monastery, which is used today as the cemetery, dates back to the 13th century and has a rich history. Present buildings, which are in full use, are well-maintained and date back to the 1600s. Other places to see include the beautiful church as well as the harbor.
