The programme for extending the tourist season in Chania is based on 11 main areas, such as sports and gastronomic tourism.

"Chania is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world as it has a unique natural environment, archeological sites, attractions and museums, cultural tradition, unique gastronomy and beaches of special natural beauty", said the responsible Deputy Mayor, Nektarios Psaroudas:

"To preserve the tourist product of Chania as first choice requires us to plan appropriate actions. The main goal of the tourist promotion programme of the Municipality of Chania is to highlight in every way all the available choices of events, opportunities and facilities during their stay ".

What research shows for tourism in Chania

Significant research findings, conducted by the Tourism Observatory of Western Crete, show that 60% of tourists who traveled to Chania were aged 34 and under. These younger age groups bring with them an increased demand for specialized facilities, as well as for personalized products and services.

The tourism promotion proposal states "in the continued effort to formulate a strategy for tourism, the above conclusions should be taken into account, as well as the internationally formed trend that the increase of tourists is achieved in the following three ways: a) by attracting visitors with different profiles b) by offering new tourism products c) by adding new markets-countries of origin ".

Sports tourism

Sports tourism is one of the fastest growing forms of tourism in the world. According to international organizations, 25% of tourists play sports on vacation while sports tourism is responsible for 220 million international arrivals worldwide. In Greece it attracts 10% of total arrivals. It is proposed for the Tourism Promotion Programme of the Municipality, to plan for the development of sports tourism such as for example the promotion of major sports events, which take place or may take place in the municipality of Chania during periods other than summer.

The aim is to attract sports tourists, which are divided into three major categories: Firstly, those whose participation in sporting events is the primary purpose of travel (primary sports tourists) and who are the largest force in the sports tourism market. Gastronomic tourism, being a growing sector of economic development, can support the primary production sector and Cretan traditional products. The combination of the geographical conditions (sea, mountains, gorges) along with the mild climatic conditions within the Municipality of Chania are the bases for the development of gastronomic tourism throughout the year.

Other actions
The development and completion of the new website of the Municipality of Chania "chaniatourism.gr", has an important place in the promotion of Chania tourism with the development and completion of the new website. The design of marketing methods and further utilization of social media can be used to promote the tourism product over the internet while at the same time, continuing to advertise through the creation of printed and digital material.

There are various other actions to be implemented including training activities and seminars for tourism workers, conducting research and studies on new marketing strategies, organizing conferences mainly during off-peak periods, organizing events and festivals on a 12-month basis, guided tours and experiential tours, organized IT signage of the municipality and public monuments and participation and presence in tourism fairs.
