Location

Kambia is a small quiet traditional village in the green Apokoronas area and is situated a few kilometers south of Kokkino Chorio and Plaka (2km) on the Almyrida - Plaka - Kambia route. From the village there are views over the Bay of Souda and the White Mountains. Kambia is close to the beaches of Almyrida, Kalives and Georgioupolis. In Kambia there is a war memorial with names from people in the village that died during all the wars on the island (Turkish Wars, World War II, the Greek Civil War etc). On the small village square there is a small white church, the Agios Nikitas, and a church square with a tree. The houses are traditionally stone built or plastered white and some of them have nice courtyards with flowerpots in them.

The village of Kokkino Chorio (meaning Red Village) is located on an altitude of 150m, away from the hustle of the towns and tourists. It is an unspoilt Cretan village with breathtaking views over the Souda Bay, the Cretan Sea and of the Lefka Ori (White Mountains), and has maintained its traditional architectural style. In the village a part of the famous movie “Zorba The Greek”, starring Anthony Quinn, Alan Bates, Irene Papas was filmed in 1964. Nowadays it is a perfect place to enjoy the real Cretan live; in the village are available tavern, kafenia and small shops, and the beachside resort of Almirida is just a 5min (6km) drive away.

Plaka is a village in the Apokoronas, a little bit east of Chania, just above Kalyves and Almyrida. The village is developing rapidly and many new houses are being built but there is still an old village centre with a large square, taverns and a church. On the way from Plaka to coastal villages below there is a magnificent view of Souda Bay and the islands in it. Down the road lies the beach of Almirida and a little bit further you can find the beaches of Kalives.

The village of Plaka has many old houses and there is a large square where you can sit under the shelter of large trees in one of the taverns, and behind that you will find a supermarket which is surprisingly good. The village and the beach of Almyrida are about 1 to 1,5km from Plaka. Here are the ATM machines, souvenir shops, a bakery, a number of small supermarkets, bars and plenty of very good taverns and restaurants where you can eat. Almyrida is a cosy and friendly little town with a couple of beaches (also suitable for people with small children because the sea is shallow
