Location
Kalamitsi-Amygdali is a small sleepy village with 130 permanent residents according to the latest census (2011). It is just a few kilometres away from the popular seashore resort of Georgioupolis and the villages of Vrysses and of Vamos.
Georgioupolis is a popular vacation resort with a great long beach (it goes for several km) and an idyllic harbour with little fishing boats at the north coast of the island, between the cities of Chania and Rethymno (35km from Chania, 25km from Rethymno). A fishing village up to 1990 or so, it was discovered and has been transformed into a popular holiday destination over the past 15 years, without losing its original charm and tranquillity. Old eucalyptus trees and a small river that flows into the sea, create a distinctive and unique ambiance (it is a wildlife refuge).
Vamos is located away from the hustle of the towns and tourists. It is an unspoilt Cretan village with view of the Lefka Ori (White Mountains), and has maintained its traditional architectural style. One will find some interesting churches, clearly showing the traditional architecture of the buildings in the area. The hospitality and the way of life the Cretan people used to lead before the burst of tourism is captured in these villages as a present way of life.
Vamos - The area is very scenic, having maintained its traditional character, mainly due to the attentive restoration of old buildings. In 1995 a group of villagers started a project to preserve the traditional way of life of Vamos. With funds from the European Union, they started a project to showcase the crafts and products of the region and restored old stone buildings using traditional materials and crafts and turned them into guest houses.
The village of Vrysses (or Vrisses/Vrises) is ideally located between the well-known towns of Rethymno (26km) and Chania (32km), close to the National Highway, the long sandy beach of Georgioupolis and the connection road with the south part at Hora Sfakia. The village is famous for its excellent yoghurt and is quite big with 850 permanent residents and all kind of facilities are available; supermarket, shops, taverns, bars, town hall, post, bank, public bus, police, school, dentist etc., and the rivers that flow through the village centre make it a great place to escape the summer heat, in the shade of the giant plane trees.
