Crete Stone House

Entering the house you are welcomed by the open plan living and dining room with its large enclosed fireplace for cosy moments during more chilly evenings and 2 ceiling fans installed for more comfort during hot summer days. As all over the house the ceilings are wooden with beams to keep the old world charm. Blue coloured patio doors open onto a sheltered covered terrace close to the pool area at the front, an optimal place to chill or dine with friends. Even during colder days you can use the terrace as recently outdoor blinds were fitted.

The start of the hallway has decorative rounded edges, adding a special feature to the lounge area. At the right hand side, separated by an arch, youll find the large fully fitted and equipped kitchen (except fridge/freezer combination) and in opposite of it, the 1st good sized double bedroom. Thereafter is coming the family bathroom (with bathtub, basin, bidet, toilet and space for the washing machine) and a shower room with basin and toilet) and finally the other two (2) bedrooms. All of the bedrooms are fitted with air-condition, wardrobes and have access on one of the terraces. The large master bedroom is benefiting from direct access to the pool area.

For the owners comfort the house is fitted with air-conditions in the bedrooms, oil fired central heating, solar panel, aluminium doors and windows, double glazed and with insect screens.

And as the Cretan life is enjoyed during April and October mainly outdoor, youll find several nice and private sitting areas in the shade, a beautiful BBQ area, and of course the tiled swimming pool (35m²) for a refreshing swim.

The gardens are filled with olive and fruit trees, flower patches and for a shed (9m²) to store garden and other utensil.

Finally this countryside home has a huge roof terrace offering lovely scenic panoramic views over the village and towards the majestic mountains. The terrace is already fitted with exterior lights and can be therefore directly be used to set up a large dining table, invite friends and enjoy a beautiful evening, or watch the stars and feel a nice cool mountain breeze.

Crete Stone House Location

At the foot of the Lefka Ori, the village of Fres with a population of 400 has a nice village square, with taverns, kafenia and small shops. Popular as well are the close by church of Madonna of the Two Rocks and the St. Antonius cave offering panoramic views of the Souda Bay and the peninsula of Akrotiri. The area is noted for its magnificent cypress trees and is one of the greenest regions in Crete. The nearest large town is the historical and bustling Chania, just a 30min drive away and several attractive beaches are within easy access, either to the west in Kalives (approx. 10km) or to the east in Georgioupolis (approx. 15km).

Apokoronas is a region of north-west Crete, in Chania Prefecture, to the east of Chania itself. The Apokoronas extends from the foothills of the White Mountains north to the coast, in a wide plain with rolling hills. To the east, Cape Drapanon rises above the plain and extends out into the Sea of Crete. The area is very green and fertile, unusual for rocky Crete.

The Kiliaris River, known in antiquity as Pyknos, runs through the region. Robert Pashley suggested that the name Apokoronas came from the ancient city of Ippokoronas or Ippokoronion, also cited by Strabo. This city may have been located near modern Nippos, or on the site of the Venetian fortress, Castel Apicorono, on an outcrop between Kalives and Almirida.

The major towns of Apokoronas are Vamos, Armeni and Vrisses, with police, municipal and utility offices as well as taverns and large churches; Kalives, Almirida and Georgioupolis are the largest beach resorts. Tourism and agriculture are the major local industries, with much construction and quarrying to satisfy the demands of many foreigners eager to buy or rent properties in what used to be beautiful and traditional villages. Apokoronas was also the location of much of the filming of the movie “Zorba, the Greek.”

The previous municipality of Fres is found in mountainous Apokoronas in a distance of 30km from the city of Chania and included the municipal apartments of Fres, Paidochorio, Melidonio, Pemonion and Tzitzifes. Main activities of the area are agriculture and cattle-breeding. Main characteristic of the municipality Fres is its green plains and its crystal clear water.

It is worth to visit Paidochori and Nerochori, two villages that combine natural beauty with traditional style. In Tzitzifes you can see the spring as well as the refreshment stand surrounded by pines and sycamores. In Pemonia you can freshen up in the Korita spring.

Particularly beautiful is the river in the municipality of Fres which combined with the abundant vegetation and the refreshment stand located there, can offer moments of relaxation and pleasure. In the area Loutro is located the church of the Two Rocks while in the area Koukos the church of Evaggelistria towers above. The Byzantine church of Agion Panton in Fres and the church of Agios Georgios with its old murals are equally interesting.

In Melidoni you can visit the monument of leader Manousakas. Remarkable is the effort of the "New Citizens of Mountainous Apokoronas", who operate the weaving workshop "O Gaitanis".
