Also in Deliana, the well preserved church of the Agios Ioannis, is pretty from the outside and has some beautiful frescoes on its walls inside, its one of the nicest of the many Byzantine churches in this area. Appearing to erupt out of the olive green treetops, a rocky bluff sweeps upwards with many caves hidden amongst its craggy facade, one of which was the wartime hide out of radio transmitters sending messages to British forces during the occupation of Crete. A memorial in the grounds of one of the churches in Malathiros tells its own story in columns of family names of the consequent reprisals for the assistance these radio transmitters were given by local heroes.
Its an approximate 15 mins drive to drop down into the bay of Kastelli and a little under 30 mins to the little harbour side town of Kolymbari.
