What makes this property unique is its exceptional design. Originally, there was a spring of water going through the house that was used as a means of maintaining watermelons at a low temperature. This whole structure has been reserved and shaped into a fountain covered with glass at the interior of the house.

The materials used in this house, such as the wooden flooring, ivory painted walls and stone in addition to the large number of windows, make the property very luminous while at the same time maintaining its original traditional character, as all traditional elements of stonemasonry have been reserved.

The village is on the main road Sitia-Ierapetra, approx. 12 km from Sitia. It is already mentioned in the 1583 census of the Venetians as Marunea with 120 inhabitants. It is the birth-place of Captain Sifis Dermitzakis (1821-1866) who was renowned as a fighter for the cause of the revolution in Crete. There are two old churches in the village and also a Minioan settlement has been located near the village.
