Kefalas is a traditional village located in the Apokoronas area, on the north side of Crete. It sits between Georgioupolis and Chania, forming a peaceful triangle away from the main highway.
Unlike the more developed Akrotiri peninsula, Apokoronas remains green, serene, and authentic, filled with olive groves, woodlands, and small farms. Nearby beaches like Almyrida, Kalives, and the long sandy stretch of Georgioupolis add to its charm.
"Kefalas gained its historical identity when Byzantine settlers established it around 1175 A.D. under Emperor Michalis Komnenos. Many historical buildings remain—some lovingly restored, others standing as quiet ruins from the Venetian and Ottoman periods.
Between 1669 and 1898, the village was under Ottoman rule, which left a lasting mark on its character and architecture. Despite being one of the larger villages in the area, Kefalas feels quiet, friendly, and deeply rooted in tradition.
There are charming squares, tall old trees, a stone windmill, and two tavernas—one of which proudly serves Illy coffee. The village has two supermarkets: one sells organics, the other—run by a kind English woman—once offered us wine!
